The observer is never neutral. It is the shortest sentence I know that carries the whole weight of the Ad Unum vision, and it is also the sentence most easily abused. Say it carelessly and it becomes a slogan for wishful thinking — the idea that we conjure reality by wanting it. Say it carefully and it becomes something far more demanding: a claim about participation, about the fact that there is no vantage point outside the world from which to watch the world, and that whatever we call knowledge, healing, or growth happens inside the very field it is trying to describe.
This article is an attempt to say it carefully. It draws on physics, on the human sciences, and on a philosophical lineage that runs from Plotinus to phenomenology — and it draws just as much on twenty years of watching people in a training room discover that the way they look at their own experience is not separate from what that experience becomes.

What the claim actually means
To say that the observer is never neutral is not to say that the observer is omnipotent. It is to say something more modest and more radical at the same time: there is no observation without a position, and every position costs something. It selects. It excludes. It arrives with a history, an instrument, a question, a body, a set of expectations, a nervous system that has been shaped by everything that came before this moment.
Neutrality, in the strong sense, would require a viewpoint from nowhere: an observer with no location, no instrument, no interest, no prior. Nothing in our experience or in our best physics offers such a thing. What we call objectivity is not the absence of a viewpoint. It is the disciplined practice of comparing viewpoints, declaring instruments, and letting other people try to break your result. Objectivity is a social achievement built on top of irreducibly situated observers — not an escape from them.
Once you see this, a great deal follows. It follows for how experiments are designed. It follows for how a therapist, a teacher, or a facilitator holds a room. It follows for how you meet your own inner life at six in the morning when nobody is watching. And it follows, in a particular way, for the practice we call Ad Unum.
Definitions before we go further
Precision first. These are the terms as we use them, stated plainly so they can be quoted, checked, and argued with.
Ad Unum — Latin for toward the One — is the philosophical and practical framework developed at Reconnective Academy International. It holds that reality is better described as one relational field than as a collection of separate things, and that consciousness participates in that field rather than observing it from outside. It is a philosophy of practice, not a doctrine of belief.
Ad Unum Experience is the structured experiential course in which this vision is met directly rather than discussed. Participants work with attention, perception, the felt sense of the body, and relational presence, in a sequence designed to move from analytical observation to participatory awareness and back again.
Ad Unum Energy Healing is the applied training path in which that same participatory posture is brought into a professional context of wellbeing work: how to be present with another person, how to hold a field of attention without imposing on it, and how to work honestly within the limits of what this kind of practice is and is not.
And the pillars, in one line each:
- The observer is never neutral. Every act of perception is an act of participation.
- Entanglement. Relation is prior to separation; what appears as two is often one description read twice.
- Fusion. In deep contact, the boundary between observer and observed becomes functionally porous.
- The One. The field does not have parts that were later joined; it has distinctions that were never truly severed.
- Evolutionary return. One does not stay in unity. One returns — into a life, a body, a relationship, a job — carrying something back.
A necessary caution, stated once and meant throughout: none of this is a medical or psychological treatment, none of it diagnoses or cures disease, and none of it substitutes for medical or psychological care. It is work on awareness and wellbeing, complementary at best, and always secondary to proper clinical treatment when treatment is needed.
The physics: where the idea comes from, and where it stops
The phrase the observer is never neutral has a physics ancestry, and it is worth walking through it slowly — both because the physics is genuinely strange, and because it is routinely misrepresented.
Measurement, not mind-over-matter
In quantum mechanics, what you find depends on what you ask. Set up an apparatus to measure position and you get position; set it up for momentum and you get momentum; and the two questions cannot both be answered with unlimited precision. Bohr called this complementarity, and built an entire interpretive framework on it — the idea that a quantum phenomenon is not a property sitting in the object, but something that includes the experimental arrangement used to reveal it (see the Stanford Encyclopedia entry on the Copenhagen interpretation).
This is already a real, non-trivial departure from classical realism. But note carefully what it says and what it does not. The measurement setup is what matters — the arrangement of mirrors, detectors, and choices. Nothing in standard quantum mechanics requires a conscious mind to collapse anything, and physicists overwhelmingly do not read it that way. When someone tells you that quantum physics proves your thoughts create your reality, they are selling you something.
Delayed choice: the question comes after the fact
John Wheeler sharpened the point with a thought experiment that was eventually built. In the delayed-choice setup, the decision about which property to measure is made after the photon has already entered the interferometer. Classically this makes no sense: the particle should have already committed to being a wave or a particle. Experimentally, the outcome tracks the late choice anyway. Jacques and colleagues realised this almost ideally with single photons and a quantum random number generator, with the choice relativistically separated from the photon entry (Jacques et al., Science, 2007).
The honest reading is not that consciousness reaches back in time. It is something subtler and, to my mind, more interesting: the neat story we want to tell — first the thing has a property, then we find it — does not survive contact with the data. The act of asking is not a passive read-out of a fact already sitting there.
Entanglement: relation before separation
Entanglement is the phenomenon in which two systems can only be described jointly: neither has a complete state of its own. This is not a metaphor and not a communication channel. It is a statement about the structure of the description. Bell tests turned the philosophical dispute into an experimental one, and the loophole-free experiments closed the remaining escape routes — Hensen and colleagues violated a Bell inequality with electron spins separated by 1.3 kilometres, with no additional assumptions required (Hensen et al., Nature, 2015). A world of independently propertied, locally separate objects is not the world we live in. Wigner’s friend: whose fact is it?
The sharpest version of the observer question is the extended Wigner’s friend scenario. Frauchiger and Renner showed that if you let agents inside the experiment use quantum theory to reason about other agents also using quantum theory, you can derive contradictory conclusions (Frauchiger & Renner, Nature Communications, 2018). Proietti and colleagues then took this into the laboratory with a six-photon experiment and violated a Bell-type inequality by five standard deviations, concluding that if one holds on to locality and free choice, quantum theory has to be read in an observer-dependent way (Proietti et al., Science Advances, 2019).
Let me be exact about the status of this. It does not prove a metaphysics of oneness. It is contested, and the interpretive debate is very much alive. What it does establish is that the assumption we all carry unreflectively — there is one set of facts, and observers merely find them — is not a free lunch. It costs something to hold, and physics is now able to charge you for it.
The guardrail
Here is the line I will not cross, and I would ask you to hold me to it. Quantum analogies are useful for loosening a rigid intuition. They are not evidence for anything about human healing, and no experiment on photons tells you anything about your body. When I use the word entanglement in a training room, I use it as an analogy for a relational structure we can observe directly in human contact — and I say so out loud. Anyone who quietly slides from the physics to the clinic without marking the seam is, at best, being sloppy. This is the difference between a philosophy that respects science and one that decorates itself with it.
The human sciences: observation changes people
Leave photons aside. In the human sciences, the non-neutrality of the observer is not a subtle interpretive puzzle. It is a well-documented, thoroughly annoying methodological fact that entire research protocols exist to contain.
The experimenter is in the data
Rosenthal and Fode’s classic demonstration is still the cleanest illustration. Students were told that their laboratory rats were either bright or dull — the labels were assigned at random — and the rats performed in line with the expectation their handlers had been given (Rosenthal & Fode, Behavioral Science, 1963). Nothing about the animals differed. Something about the observers did, and it travelled through handling, timing, and micro-behaviour that the students themselves could not report.
The whole architecture of blinding in modern research exists because of this. We do not blind studies out of ritual. We blind them because we know, with evidence, that the observer leaks.
Being studied changes you
The other side of the same coin is the participant. The Hawthorne literature is messier than the popular version suggests, but a careful systematic review found consistent evidence that knowing you are being observed alters behaviour, while arguing that we need better concepts than the folklore term to study these research participation effects properly (McCambridge, Witton & Elbourne, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 2014).
Notice how ordinary this is. You already know it. You drive differently with a police car behind you. You write differently when someone is reading over your shoulder. You breathe differently when a practitioner puts a hand near your shoulder and says just notice what happens. The observer is in the room, and the room knows.
The observer you cannot escape
Now turn it inward, which is where this becomes personal rather than merely methodological. When you observe your own anxiety, the observation is not a camera pointed at a scene. It is part of the scene. Watching your fear with contempt intensifies it. Watching it with curiosity changes its texture within seconds. Watching it while narrating a story about what it means about you as a person produces a third thing entirely.
This is, I think, the most practically consequential form of the principle, and it is why it sits at the centre of our work on personal growth. You cannot get a clean read on your own inner life, because the reading instrument is made of the same material as the thing being read. What you can do — and this is trainable — is become aware of the quality of your own looking.
The philosophy: from the One to the lived body
The intuition is old, older than physics, and it has been developed with more rigour than most contemporary versions of it manage.
Plotinus and the One
In the Neoplatonic tradition, the One is not the biggest item in the inventory of things. It is prior to the distinction between things — the condition under which anything can be a something at all. Multiplicity is not an error to be abolished but a procession, an unfolding, and the philosophical life is a movement of return toward the source (see the Stanford Encyclopedia entry on Plotinus).
I find this framing useful precisely because it refuses the flattening that modern spiritual language performs on the word oneness. In Plotinus, unity is structurally prior, not emotionally comforting. It is a claim about ontology, not about how nice it feels to dissolve.
Merleau-Ponty and the body that perceives
The phenomenological tradition took the observer question in a different and, for practice, even more useful direction. For Merleau-Ponty, perception is not a mind receiving data through a body. The body is the perceiving; we are not spectators of a world but participants embedded in it, with a perspective that cannot be subtracted (see the Stanford Encyclopedia entry on Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and, for the wider method, the entry on phenomenology).
This matters enormously in a training room. If perception is bodily, then changing the state of the body changes the observation — not by distorting a neutral signal, but because there was never a neutral signal to distort. Posture, breath, muscular readiness, and the quality of contact are not preparation for the work. They are the work.
Nagel and the irreducible point of view
Thomas Nagel gave the argument its most quoted form: an organism has conscious experience if there is something it is like to be that organism, and this what-it-is-like resists reduction to any objective, third-person account precisely because it is essentially tied to a point of view (Nagel, The Philosophical Review, 1974). Objectivity works by moving away from a particular perspective — and the one phenomenon we most want to explain is constituted by having one.
Enaction: the organism brings forth its world
The enactive tradition made this into a research programme. Thompson and Varela argued that the processes crucial to consciousness cut across the divisions between brain, body, and world, rather than being contained in neural events alone (Thompson & Varela, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2001). Cognition is not the internal representation of an external world; it is the bringing-forth of a world through structural coupling between organism and environment.
Read that sentence again with the pillar in mind. The observer is never neutral, because the observer and the observed are two poles of one ongoing process. This is not mysticism. It is a mainstream position in the cognitive sciences with an experimental literature behind it. Our own philosophy pages develop this line at length.
The Ad Unum arc: entanglement, fusion, the One, evolutionary return
What Ad Unum adds is not new physics and not new phenomenology. It is a sequence — a way of moving through these ideas that has a beginning, a middle, and, crucially, an end that returns you to your life.
Entanglement is the entry point: the recognition, first intellectual and then felt, that you are not observing your life from a balcony. In practice this often shows up as a small, unglamorous moment — noticing that your judgement of another person shifts what that person does in front of you, and that this loop has been running your whole life.
Fusion is the deepening: sustained contact in which the working boundary between observer and observed becomes porous. This is a well-documented family of states in the phenomenology of attention, and it needs no supernatural framing. Musicians know it. Surgeons know it. Anyone who has been fully absorbed in a conversation knows it. What structured practice adds is the ability to enter it deliberately rather than by luck.
The One is the orientation: the recognition that the porousness was not created by the practice. The practice merely stopped maintaining a division that was always a description rather than a fact.
Evolutionary return is where our approach differs most sharply from the spiritual mainstream, and it is the pillar I would defend most strongly. Unity is not a destination. A practice that leaves people floating, unable to hold a job, a marriage, or a difficult conversation, has failed — however profound the experience felt. The measure of the work is what comes back: whether attention is steadier, whether the person is kinder under pressure, whether they can stay present when something hurts. Return is not a consolation prize after the peak. Return is the point.
What changes in practice
Four consequences, stated as concretely as I can.
1. Attention is an act, not a window
If observation participates, then attention is something you do, with consequences, rather than a passive aperture. This changes the ethics of attention. Where you place it, how long you hold it, and with what quality are not neutral choices about intake. They are actions in the world.
2. The quality of presence is a variable, and it is trainable
In any work involving another person — teaching, facilitation, wellbeing practice — the practitioner is not outside the system. Their breathing rate, their agenda, their hurry, their need for the session to go well: all of it is in the field. The single most useful skill I know is the ability to notice your own state while working, and to settle it without leaving the contact. This is the core of what we train in the Academy courses.
3. Honesty is structural, not decorative
If the observer shapes the outcome, then a practitioner who overstates what a practice can do is not merely being inaccurate — they are actively constructing the client’s experience with that overstatement. This is the strongest argument I know against guru posturing, and it is not a moral argument. It is a mechanical one. Inflated claims are inputs. They contaminate the very thing they claim to help. Saying I do not know, this may do nothing, and please see your doctor is not weakness. It is the only way to keep the field clean enough for anything real to happen in it.
4. Growth is measured on the way back down
Because return is the point, the diagnostic question after any practice is never how deep did you go. It is: what is different on Tuesday morning? Did you interrupt less? Did the argument with your partner go differently? Did you notice the irritation before it became a sentence you regret? These are unglamorous metrics. They are also the only ones that have ever meant anything.
A thought experiment: two observers, one room
Try this as a way of testing the claim on yourself rather than taking my word for it.
Imagine two people watching the same person tell a difficult story. The first watches diagnostically — categorising, mapping the story onto a framework, deciding what is really going on. The second watches receptively, without a category ready, letting the story land before deciding anything.
Now ask: are they observing the same event? Superficially yes. But the storyteller will speak differently to each. Pauses will be filled or held. Some sentences will be said to one and not the other. The data will differ — and each observer will walk away with an accurate account of a different event, both of them partly authored by their own way of looking.
Neither posture is wrong. Diagnosis has its place; so does reception. The illusion is thinking that either of them is a neutral recording. Once you have felt this from the inside — and it takes about ten minutes of deliberate practice to feel it — the principle stops being an idea and becomes something you can work with. This is also why energy and healing work, in the wellbeing sense we mean, has to begin with the practitioner rather than the technique.
Objections, taken seriously
“This is just quantum mysticism with better footnotes.” A fair suspicion, and the reason I marked the seam explicitly above. My claim is not that quantum physics validates a spiritual practice. My claim is that non-neutral observation is independently established in the human sciences, independently argued in phenomenology, and independently strange in physics — three separate lines of evidence that happen to point the same direction. The philosophical argument would survive intact if every quantum reference in this article were deleted.
“If nothing is neutral, isn’t everything relative?” No, and this matters. Situated does not mean arbitrary. The claim is that objectivity is built, not found — through replication, blinding, adversarial review, and instrument declaration. Recognising the observer’s role is what makes those methods necessary, not what makes them useless.
“What is the falsifiable content?” On the human side, plenty: experimenter expectancy effects, participation effects, and the state-dependence of perception all generate testable predictions, and some of them have failed and been revised. On the metaphysical side, less — and I would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. A philosophy of the One is a framework for organising experience, and it should be judged by whether it produces people who see more clearly and live better, not by whether it can be tested in a laboratory.
“Can this replace therapy or medical treatment?” No. Unambiguously no. It is complementary work on awareness and wellbeing. If you are unwell, see a clinician.
