What is the zero-point field?

Keppler does not claim that neurons are little quantum computers. His model works at the level of the electromagnetic field. He argues that the brain’s basic functional units — cortical microcolumns, bundles of roughly a hundred neurons acting together — can couple to the zero-point field through resonance mediated by neurotransmitters such as glutamate. Where this coupling stabilizes, it forms what physicists call coherence domains: local regions in which many molecules and fields vibrate in step, briefly and collectively, rather than each doing its own thing.

Coherence domains, in ordinary language

Imagine a stadium crowd. Most of the time it is noise — thousands of independent voices with no shared pattern. Then a chant catches, and suddenly the crowd behaves as one large oscillating body. Nothing new was added; the same people simply fell into phase. A coherence domain is that “falling into phase” applied to the electromagnetic activity of brain tissue and the vacuum field it sits in. This is an elegant move because it reframes an old puzzle. Instead of asking “how does the brain manufacture the redness of red?”, the model asks “how does the brain tune into a particular note already latent in a universal field?” On this view the brain is less a projector generating the film and more a radio selecting a station from a signal that is everywhere. It is important to be honest about the status of this idea: it is a physically motivated hypothesis with proposed mechanisms and, crucially, proposed ways to test it — not a demonstrated fact. But it is exactly the kind of hypothesis that moves a field forward, because it can be argued with, modelled, and eventually checked.

Microtubules, anesthesia, and the fading of the observer

If quantum-scale structure inside neurons has anything to do with consciousness, then interfering with that structure should change consciousness in measurable ways. In 2024, a team led by Michael Wiest at Wellesley College reported an experiment that speaks directly to this prediction, published in the Society for Neuroscience journal eNeuro.

The researchers worked with microtubules — the tiny protein scaffolds that give cells their shape and, according to some theories, might host delicate quantum processes. They gave rats a drug, epothilone B, that binds to and stabilizes microtubules, and then exposed the animals to an anesthetic gas. The result was clean and striking: rats whose microtubules had been stabilized took significantly longer to fall unconscious. Something about the microtubules was making the animals more resistant to being switched off.

We should be measured about what this shows. It does not prove Orch OR or any particular quantum theory, and there are classical explanations worth ruling out. What it does do is revive a serious, testable link between anesthesia — the most reliable “off switch” for consciousness ever discovered — and the sub-cellular architecture that quantum theories care about. For a debate that critics have long dismissed as untestable, an animal experiment with a dose-dependent effect on the threshold of unconsciousness is a meaningful data point. The observer, it seems, can be dimmed by reaching down to a very small scale indeed.

From Orch OR to the vacuum: a short history

None of this arrived from nowhere. The modern conversation began in the 1990s when the physicist Roger Penrose and the anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff proposed “orchestrated objective reduction,” or Orch OR. Their 2014 review in Physics of Life Reviews remains the reference statement of the theory: consciousness, they argued, arises from orchestrated quantum computations in neuronal microtubules, with each moment of awareness corresponding to a threshold event in the fabric of spacetime itself.

Orch OR was met with fierce, and largely fair, criticism. The physicist Max Tegmark calculated that quantum states in the warm, wet, noisy brain should collapse — decohere — far too quickly to be useful for thought. For years this “warm, wet, and noisy” objection looked decisive. The interesting development of the past decade is that the objection has softened rather than hardened. Quantum biology has found genuine, non-trivial quantum effects in living systems, from photosynthesis to bird navigation, and a handful of experiments have measured longer-than-expected coherence in microtubule-like structures. The door that Tegmark seemed to close has not reopened fully, but it is no longer bolted.

Keppler’s zero-point-field model can be read as the next turn of this spiral. It sidesteps the hardest version of the decoherence problem by not requiring fragile quantum computation inside neurons at all. The relevant coherence lives in the electromagnetic field and its coupling to tissue, which is a different and arguably more robust proposition. Whether it survives scrutiny is unknown. But the trajectory is clear: from quantum computation inside cells, toward quantum fields that cells are embedded in. The observer is being relocated from a machine in the skull to a relationship with a universal background.

The observer is never neutral: entanglement and measurement

There is a reason quantum physics keeps colliding with questions about consciousness, and it is not mysticism. It is measurement. In quantum mechanics, the act of observing a system is not a passive reading of a value that was already there. The measurement participates in fixing the outcome. Before it, a particle can exist in a superposition of possibilities; the interaction we call “measurement” is what yields a single definite result.

The deepest experimental confirmation of how strange this is came with entanglement. When two particles are entangled, measuring one instantaneously constrains the other, no matter how far apart they are — a correlation with no classical explanation. This is not a fringe claim. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger precisely for the experiments that closed the loopholes and established, beyond reasonable doubt, that nature violates the limits any “local, pre-determined” theory would obey. Reality is genuinely non-local and genuinely participatory.

Notice what this does to the intuition of the detached scientist standing safely outside the world, recording it. At the quantum level there is no such standpoint. To engage a system is to be in relationship with it, and to change what becomes actual. The observer is never neutral. That phrase is not a slogan borrowed from self-help; it is a fair, if compressed, reading of a century of careful physics. And it is the natural bridge from the laboratory to the vision that animates our work.

Now suppose — only suppose — that consciousness is more like the reception than the broadcast.
