Quantum consciousness has spent decades on the disputed border between physics and philosophy. In 2024, 2025, and now 2026, that border has started to move. A handful of careful experiments have taken ideas once dismissed as speculation and dragged them, cautiously, into the laboratory. What is quantum consciousness?
Quantum consciousness is the hypothesis that some features of conscious experience depend on quantum-physical processes in the brain — such as coherence, superposition, or entanglement — rather than on classical electrochemistry alone. It is not a single theory but a family of them. The best known is orchestrated objective reduction (Orch OR), proposed by anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff and physicist Sir Roger Penrose, which locates quantum computation inside microtubules, the tiny structural filaments within neurons.
For most of its life, this idea faced a decisive objection: the brain is warm, wet, and noisy, and quantum states there should collapse far too quickly to matter. That objection still carries weight. What has changed is that the debate is no longer purely theoretical.
The 2024–2026 evidence, read carefully
Three strands of research have shifted quantum consciousness from armchair argument toward testable science. None of them proves the case. Together, they make it harder to wave away.
Microtubules and the switch of anesthesia
In 2024, Mike Wiest and a team at Wellesley College published a striking result in the journal eNeuro. When they gave rats a drug that binds to and stabilizes microtubules, the animals took significantly longer to lose consciousness under anesthetic gas. If microtubules were incidental to awareness, tampering with them should not change how quickly consciousness switches off. The delay suggests these structures sit closer to the mechanism of consciousness than the classical picture assumes (Wiest et al., 2024). The finding is consistent with a quantum model — though consistency is not confirmation.
Entanglement signatures in a living brain
A 2022 study by Christian Kerskens and David López Pérez, published in the Journal of Physics Communications, used an MRI technique borrowed from quantum-gravity research. If proton spins in the brain became entangled through an unknown mediator, the researchers reasoned, a specific signal should appear. It did — a pattern resembling heartbeat-evoked potentials, normally seen only in conscious brains (Kerskens & López Pérez, 2022). The authors are careful: the result is an indication, not a proof. But it is a measurement, not a metaphor.
The brain and the zero-point field
In late 2025, physicist Joachim Keppler proposed in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience that the brain may couple to the electromagnetic zero-point field — the irreducible background energy of empty space described by quantum electrodynamics — producing macroscopic quantum effects tied to the synchronized activity that accompanies conscious states (Keppler, 2025). The skeptical case still stands
Intellectual honesty requires the counter-argument. A 2026 critical review in Frontiers in Psychology notes that much of the quantum-consciousness literature borrows terms like superposition and entanglement as verbal decoration, without offering mechanisms that can be tested or falsified (Frontiers in Psychology, 2026). The warm-brain decoherence problem has not vanished. The prudent position is neither belief nor ridicule, but suspended judgment held with genuine curiosity — the same posture we bring to science at the Academy. From observation to fusion: the Ad Unum reading
Here the physics meets the philosophy. A recurring lesson of quantum experiments is that the observer is never neutral. Measurement is participation; the act of relating to a system helps shape what that system becomes. Ad Unum takes this insight and follows it past the laboratory door.
