We will learn the Art of Dying in order to learn the Art of Living.

We live in an age of great crisis. Old certainties are dissolving and many people feel at the mercy of fears, attachments and uncertainty. Beyond the Mirror (Al di là dello Specchio) is a one-of-a-kind journey: it does not ask you to believe anything, but invites you to look at reality with new eyes and to build balance, stability and freedom within yourself.

Through simple, clear and effective language — and valuable experiential moments — you will discover how three great paths of human knowledge, starting from radically different premises, converge on the same fundamental insights about impermanence, the nature of the mind and the possibility of authentic liberation:

  • the age-old wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism and the map of existence traced in the Bardo Thodol;
  • contemporary scientific research on consciousness, death, time and reality (neuroscience and quantum physics);
  • Western philosophy, from Plato to Heidegger, from Schopenhauer to Wittgenstein.

The result is a rich exposition that will broaden your vision with new insights for perceiving and interpreting reality, offering you concrete tools to withstand the impact of the great global crisis now under way and to free yourself from fears and attachments, moving forward in your life with balance and stability.

The programme of the five sessions

① Session 1 — The two realities and the two faces of the mind
Tuesday 6 October, 6:30 pm
The information field, entanglement and the non-local mind: how 20th-century physics dissolved the universe made of separate objects. The Tibetan Madhyamaka view of Nagarjuna: conventional truth and ultimate truth, ordinary mind (sem) and primordial mind (rigpa). States of consciousness and brainwaves (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma). Introduction to the meditative state: shamatha and vipassana.

② Session 2 — The Self, time and the architecture of consciousness
Friday 9 October, 6:30 pm
The fear of death and the Self as a phenomenon empty of inherent existence (Anatman). The three levels of the mind (gross, subtle, very subtle) and the eight aspects of consciousness of the Yogacara school. Rebirth and incarnation: “soul-making” and the figure of the Bodhisattva. The circular view of time, primordial energy and the five Elements, subtle anatomy and physiology (nadi, chakra, prana).

③ Session 3 — The Art of Dying: the cycle of the Bardos and the Clear Light
Tuesday 13 October, 6:30 pm
The circular view of time and the six Bardos. Conception and the natural bardo of this life. The painful bardo of dying and the cycle of dissolution (outer, inner, Clear Light). Phowa: the practice of transferring consciousness at the moment of death. A look at scientific research on NDEs and on consciousness near death.

④ Session 4 — The luminous states and the realms of rebirth
Thursday 15 October, 6:30 pm
The four phases of the luminous Bardo of Dharmata: the lights, sounds and forms of fundamental reality. The Bardo of Becoming: duration, karmic dynamics and new possibilities of liberation. Rebirth in the six samsaric realms and the deep meaning of the human condition as the only realm in which liberation is possible.

⑤ Session 5 — Training in life: the practice and the Nine Unions
Tuesday 20 October, 6:30 pm
The five powers (faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, wisdom) to be developed in the face of death. The three Clear Lights — of death, of sleep and of meditation — and how to recognise them. Training in life to seize the opportunity for liberation: dream yoga, Tonglen, contemplation of impermanence. The Nine Unions, the culmination of the Tibetan system of practice.
