Bell’s Inequality and Consciousness: The Hidden Variable of Healing

When physicists debate Bell’s inequality and consciousness, they are usually not thinking about an energy-healing session. Yet the questions are strikingly similar. What is real? What is hidden? And who – or what – decides the outcome of an experiment, or a healing process?

John Stewart Bell showed that quantum mechanics cannot be understood as a simple machine driven by local “hidden variables”. His inequality, and the experiments that violated it, shook the foundations of physics and earned Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger the 2022 Nobel Prize for Physics. Wikipedia+1

Italian Professor from the University of Pisa  Corrado Malanga, commenting on Bell’s work, goes even further. From his perspective, classical mechanics, relativity and quantum mechanics are all incomplete models of reality – and quantum theory is simply “the least wrong” of the three.
During his conferences on Bell’s inequality and consciousness, he suggests that what is missing from our equations is not another particle, but the very thing we use to read equations: Consciousness.


In this article, I would like to bring these threads together and ask a simple, practical question:

If Bell’s hidden parameters exist, could they be parameters of consciousness – and could this help us understand why some people heal and others do not?

From Classical Physics to Bell’s Inequality

For a long time, physics tried to tell a single, clear story.

Bell stepped into this picture in the 1960s. Building on the famous Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox, he proved a powerful result now known as Bell’s theorem. In simple terms, Bell showed that no theory with local hidden variables can reproduce all the predictions of quantum mechanics. Wikipedia+1

Later experiments, including those celebrated by the 2022 Nobel Prize, confirmed that the real world violates Bell’s inequality. Entangled particles behave in a way that cannot be explained by any classical picture of separate objects carrying pre-assigned properties. NobelPrize.org+1

So Bell leaves us with a choice:

Malanga reads this situation in a provocative way: if all our mechanical models fail at some level, perhaps the real missing piece is not a better equation but a deeper subject – the one who observes.

What Are Bell’s Hidden Parameters, Really?

In Bell’s original work, the hidden parameters (often denoted by λ) are mathematical variables that would, in principle, determine the outcome of each measurement if we could access them. They are “hidden” only because we cannot see them directly. Wikipedia

Physicists have tried for decades to construct explicit hidden-variable models. Some of them are local, some non-local, some deterministic, some stochastic. None of them has been universally accepted.

From a more experiential viewpoint, however, we can ask a different question. Instead of asking where the hidden variables are, we can ask:

Who is reading the results?

This is the pivot that Malanga proposes when he talks about consciousness as the true underlying structure of reality. In his work, consciousness is not a by-product of the brain, but the primary field from which matter and information emerge.

In that light, Bell’s hidden parameters could be re-interpreted not as extra knobs on the apparatus, but as qualities of awareness – the way consciousness tunes in to an event, an experiment or a healing session.

Von Neumann and the Question of the Observer

John von Neumann, one of the founding figures of modern quantum theory, approached the measurement problem from a different angle. In his 1932 book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, he showed that the formalism of quantum mechanics allows the “collapse” of the wavefunction to be placed anywhere along the chain: from the microscopic system, to the measuring device, to the brain of the observer. Modern scholarship has recently revisited von Neumann’s position. A 2025 study by Federico Laudisa, Between Myth and History: von Neumann on Consciousness in Quantum Mechanics, argues that von Neumann himself was more cautious than many later interpretations suggest. He did not simply declare that “consciousness collapses the wavefunction”, but he did open the door for the observer to play a special role in the formalism. arXiv+1

At the same time, several recent papers and experiments explore consciousness-collapse models inspired by the von Neumann–Wigner tradition. For example, work published by the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 2025 tested whether focused human attention can measurably influence an optical interference pattern, explicitly invoking the von Neumann–Wigner interpretation. Alongside this, philosophical and scientific articles – such as those from the Essentia Foundation and the Journal of Consciousness Studies – explore idealist interpretations where mind is irreducible and may even be primary in the construction of physical reality. In short, even if von Neumann did not literally write, “we are the creators of the universe”, his mathematics and its modern extensions strongly suggest that the observer is not just a passive spectator. The observer is part of the machinery that brings a specific reality into focus.

Consciousness as the Hidden Variable

This brings us to a simple synthesis.

Let’s define it in a very practical way:

Consciousness is the capacity you have to understand what you are observing.

It is not only awareness that “something is happening”.
It also includes the depth with which you recognise yourself in what is happening.
This is the degree to which you can see a situation not as something external that attacks you, but as an interaction in a larger field that you also are.

In this sense, Bell’s inequality and consciousness stop being an abstract puzzle and become a mirror. The same external event – or the same healing frequency – interacts with very different inner landscapes. The “hidden variable” is not the photon; it is how deeply you can meet what the photon (or the experience) is showing you.

Why Do Some People Heal and Others Do Not?

This does not mean that those who do not experience an immediate physical change are “less spiritual” or “less evolved”. That kind of judgment is simply another old paradigm of guilt and blame.

Instead, it means that healing is a co-creation between a universal intelligence and the specific, unrepeatable pattern of consciousness that you are. Sometimes the most important part of that co-creation is not the symptom disappearing, but a sudden clarity, a new decision, or a quiet courage that changes the entire trajectory of your life.

In all of this, the message is simple:

Bell’s Inequality, Malanga and the Return to the One

So, who is right – Bell with his hidden variables, or von Neumann with his observer at the end of the chain?

From the point of view we are sketching here, both are right.

In this sense, Bell’s inequality and consciousness are not in opposition. Bell points to an inequality in the numbers; consciousness restores a deeper equality in Being. The “hidden parameter” is one, and it exists. It is the capacity of your awareness to recognise what it is already part of.

Nothing that you do without consciousness will truly work in the long term.
Nothing that you deeply understand and embody can ever be taken away from you.

This is why a profound inner work is not a luxury; it is a necessity. As Corrado Malanga likes to remind his audience when he speaks about Bell’s inequality, the real mystery is not in the equations but in the one who reads them.
